Veterans Day or Remembrance Day here in Canada, has once again come and gone. This is me... waiting a bit... to be respectful of that day. I believe with all my heart that such a day is of great import to our culture, but I also believe that we pay poor honor to in, in that the message is one about the horrible, fruitless, and wasteful thing that war is. Now... ever year, someone trots out the John Lennon song "Imagine" to evoke a moment of group angst and wistful thoughts of peace and love. I am a grand fan of John Lennon's art... but that does not make me blind or deaf. How is it... that so many, so willfully, shut down their good sense, and chime in with "Imagine" like they're making little wishes and dreaming of better days? Let's take a second look at the song, and stop doing the brain-dead "sing the chorus" thing for a moment. The song lyrics are in Italic and my comments are not. Imagine : John Lennon Imagine there's no Heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky ~ alrighty then... right out of the gates... dump religion off the back of the truck. All of it... Christians? Gone. Jew? Nope. Islam? Thing of the past. Imagine all the people Living for today ~ ... ah yes... "live for today"... like somebody is waiting to come and take care of you tomorrow? right. Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do ~ yes, it, in fact, is quite difficult to imagine "no countries". I mean, forget social programs. And if we have no countries, where do we draw our identity from? Do we suddenly stop being culturally aware? Give me a break... Nothing to kill or die for ~ sounds good to me. I'm all for that... And no religion too ~ once more with the "no religion" thing... I'm all for it... but ... are you? Imagine all the people Living life in peace ~ yes! Lovely... I would love to see that... Tis a wonderful idea. You may say that I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one ~ dreamer? Ok... but basically I see this song and these ideas so far as kinda stupid. Nothing to pin my hopes and dreams for peace on. No countries, no religion, no culture... just one big melting pot of poor people. Wohoo... I'm bursting with excitement... Not. Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can ~ yes... I can. It's called Communism. They tried that... Lessons learned, bro. No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world ~ Um... greed and hunger ran rampant in every communist experiment. Especially the Hunger part. If we're all sharing away like mad and nobody is being greedy... how are we getting any work done? Or are we just expecting all the farmers to keep banging their heads against the bank vault door and slaving away like mad to supply us with all this food? You may say that I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will live as one ~ yup... dreamer. Sadly... not the only one. I dream of, and hope for peace... but I don't really think a Babylonian cesspool of possession-less atheists are going to be down with the plan. There are many and wonderful songs of hope, peace and love. This is not one of them. This is a ridiculous set of lyrics that magically cause normal people to become witless while they sing along with the chorus.
