You know ... it's sunny out right now... but apparently the black clouds circling the city... will put an end to all that sunshine stuff.
I watched the series finale of West Wing last night... while the kids maple storied away downstairs... and suz maple'ed away upstairs (more on that in a sec), and the stupid tears were dripping off my cheeks... That show set a standard of excellence for me with television. I was all tear'en up with Happy-For-Donna when she was looking at her new office .... I was moved by the oath of office moment... especially by the character of the new first lady... and signing Toby's pardon... You know... I bailed on the show for most of a season ... and I honestly have no idea what Toby did. Anyone? Beuler?
Maple Story... suz decided to register and try the game to better understand what the kids were doing and to assess the threats the site posed... Now she's a level 32 cleric... aka a god! .... sigh.

On the way to work today, the fun-bobby radio station (hot89.9) had a STUPID STUPID STUPID segment on and I'm trying to calm down enough to write a coherent letter to them about it. They pulled this guy on to do some self-promotion about his Kid Safe web site. They introduce the segment with a bit on how predators are out there... and hunting your kids... and ended it with a quote about how may stings prove it only takes 2 hours to go from the chat room "hi how are ya?" to crazy fucker on your doorstep. Mr. Kidsafe was promoting his (and I quote) "Hacker Free Web Site" and they were all talking about his SOFTWARE like it was the answer to protecting your kids... HOLY FUCK PEOPLE... it's a bit of self-installed spyware... key stroke recorder to use on your kids computer. It's not going to protect your kid from shit. It records what your kid types, not what other people say to your kid and AND AND AND... you have to read the reports from the program before you can do anything about the fact that little johnny left to meet "happy jim" yesterday after school. I cannot express how frustrating and stupid this is. It's just another example of someone cashing in on the notion that people will do almost anything to alleviate their guilt about letting the internet babysit their kids. No software, to firewall, no web site... is going to protect your kids. Only you can do that. Make rules about when and where they can go... ENFORCE those rules. Don't put their computer in their bed room and let them shut the door and live there. The time will come when they are teenagers and they will need or justifiably want to be alone at the computer... they'll have earned their privacy... but the road to that is paved with the lessons you teach them when they are kids. And relying on some software that will let you spy on junior... is just not going to cut it.

So I've sat with Geo and watched all of the dogtown stuff... the documentary and the movie. He's been properly educated on the history of pool skating. :) It is always a trip to share something like that with the kids... they ask all kids of questions... so much so that you have to pause constantly to explain things or to just talk about issues. This experience dealt with drugs, sex, broken marriages, poverty, violence, marketing, sport, practice!!!, initiative, fear, love, and a whole bunch of other things... It was interesting. :)
K. time to git.
See ya. :)
