my folks took me with ... on a trip to Houston.
It was a business thing...
For one reason or another... I ended up in Fort Worth,
staying with family friends. Lovely house... big family.
Across the road... a fenced field and two horses.
All over town... SKATE PARKS.
It was, chronologically speaking, the mathematical root of the skateboard boom.
Dudes... this was twenty eight years ago.
Rod Steward was singing about Maggie... and just released "A night on the town" (the first cut is the ...)
And skateboards were fucking king.
Tony Hawk was eight... and magazines already reported on his favourite wheels!
While I was there... I made the command decision to blow a bunch of "trip money" on a skateboard.
Tracker Trucks, Powerflex Wheels - Red, Blue, Yellow and Green and a pair of replacement bearings, and a G&S (gordon smith) fiber-flex board.
We were at this huge ass skate park as often as their son and I could convince the adults to let us...
There has not been a single summer since then that I have not used the skateboard.
I have never even had to replace the bearings...
Every gram of that skateboard is as good today as it was the day I bought it... save for a billion scratches.
I bought the boys a pair of skateboards ... they suck.
We'll be lucky if they make it to next summer.
And I have to replace the bearings...
ps. I still know exactly where to reach to find the replacement bearings... a factoid that amazes me.
